The priest that write our Goshuin also gave us a Manju
Zuirinji was established by Jiun-in Nisshin, who originally received the support of Tokugawa leyasu, the first Shogun of the Edo Era.
As the 17th Chief Abbot of Minobusan Kuonji, Nishin officiated at the 300-year memorial service of Nichiren Shonin in 1581. Commemorating this event, leyasu, who was then a district governor, visited him at Minobusan in
1582. leyasu promised Nishin to establish a temple to spread Nichiren Buddhisum as a token of his appreciation for tutoring him at a young age.
After unifying Japan, leyasu delivered on his promise by establishing a temple named Zuirinji, at Nihonbashi Bakuro-cho in Tokyo. The original temple was approximately 200 square meters. However, it burnt down from fires in 1595 and 1601. It was then moved to the present location in
Yanaka, with the support of Ukyo Ando.
The temple again suffered extensive damage in a typhoon in 1856 and during a civil war of 1868. However, since then, the successive head priests have made great efforts to strengthen Zuirinji, establishing it as one of the most important temples of Nichiren-Shu.
The temple once had 15 bo (subordinate temples) but now counts 5: Joen-in, Taisei-in, Shogyo-in, Kujo-in and Honmyo-in.
Commemorating 400 years since the opening of the Edo period by Tokugawa leyasu, the 56 Abbots Nissho made numerous restorations to the main hall, as well as other buildings on the temple property, such as the gate, belfry, main alley and added the new mausoleum.
