Zojoji was founded by the priest Yuyo Shoso in 1393 as the first Nembutsu dojo (practice hall) in the Kanto area.
During the Edo period (1600-1868), it was the family temple of the Tokugawa shoguns, reaching high prosperity as the administrative center in charge of all Jodo Shu temples in Japan. At its peak, the extensive temple grounds held more than 120 buildings with some 3,000 priests.
Buddhism declined during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and most of the Zojoji buildings burned in the bombings of the Second World War. After the war Zojoji was gradually restored, and it is now a popular center for religious and cultural activities.
At the 2:01 mark, These are "care guardian deities of children".
They are dedicated for the safety growth of children and grandchildren, as well as for the memorial service for still birth or miscarried children.
To protect and keep warm their heads, "red hat" "red apron" and "windmill", were dedicated to the guardian deity of children image.
