開口神社 (Aguchi Shrine)

開口神社御祭神

塩土老翁神（元 開口村の神）
海上交通を守る神であり、伊邪那岐命の子、塩（潮）を司る神であり、命の源泉を護る神ともいわれ、安産の神として崇められている。
素盞嗚神（元 木戸村の神）
伊邪那岐命・伊邪那美命の子で、天照大神の弟。国土安全、植林の神、疫病除災の神として崇められている。
生国魂神（元 原村の神）
国土開発発展の基となる神として崇められ、生島神ともいわれる

開口神社は、神功皇后により創建されたと伝えられ、奈良時代には開口水門姫神社とも称されています。港を護る役割をもち、最古の国道と言われる竹内街道・長尾街道の西端にありました。また行基により、念仏寺も建立されたと言われています。

その後、平安末期の天永4年(1113)、開口村、木戸村、原村の三村の神社が合わさって、三村宮（又は三村明神）とも称されました。

念仏寺の通称が「大寺」であったため、念仏寺が廃寺となった今も、堺の人々は「大寺さん」と愛着をこめて読んでいます。

明治時代には、本神社境内に、現在の堺市役所、大阪府立三国丘高等学校、大阪府立泉陽高等学校、堺市立第一幼稚園などが置かれたこともありました。

堺にゆかりの深い絵師土佐光起が本神社の創建を描いた『大寺縁起』や古くから伝来する『伏見天皇宸翰御歌集』、『短刀（銘吉光）』は、重要文化財に指定されています。

『念仏寺築地修理料差文』
天文元年(1532)12月、堺の町の大半を焼失する大火などで寺の築地が壊れたため、築地修理料として１貫文を割り当て、寄進を募った際の記録です。「今市町　与四郎殿せん」とあるのが千利休、「舳松町 紹鴎皮屋」とあるのが武野紹鴎です。

このような開口神社文書は、鎌倉時代から江戸時代にいたる開口神社と大寺（念仏寺）関係の古文書であり、大阪府の有形文化財に指定されています。

Aguchi Shrine is said to have been founded by Empress Jingu and to have become the guardian shrine for the harbor later in the Nara era. It is also said that the Buddist priest Gyoki founded Nembutsuji Temple within the shrine grounds. The shrine is located at the west end of Takenouchi and Nagao Historic Roads, which are believed to be the oldest national highways in Japan.

In 1113, near the end of the Heian era, Aguchi Shrine was founed from the combination of shrines in Aguchi-mura, Kido-mura and hara-mura village, and was also known at the time as Mimuragu or mimura-myojin. Inside the shrine is the remains of nembutsuji Temple, which was familiarly called Otera at the time, and the shrine is still referred to as "Otera-san" in the Sakai region.

An important site in Sakai during the Meiji era, the shrine grounds were shared with Sakai City Office, Mikunigaoka Prefectural Senior High School, Senyo Prefectural Senior High School and Daiichi Municipal Kindergarten.

the shrine contains some Important cultural properties such as the anthology "Fushimi Tenno Shinkan On-utashu", a short sword bearing the signature of "Yoshimitsu", and the picture scroll "Otera Engi". "Otera Engi" was created by Tosa Mitsuoki, an artist noted in connection with Sakai, and it tell the story of the foundation of the shrine.堺市 自転車まちづくり基金事業
